Breast reduction surgery will reduce the size of the breasts by removing excess fat, tissue and skin, and the shape of the breast is improved. Many women choose to undergo this procedure to gain relief from the physical and emotional stress caused by large breasts, rather than for simply cosmetic reasons. Breast reduction surgery can give you a more youthful breast shape and remove the discomfort of living with heavy breasts.
Am I a Candidate?
Many women who suffer from pain in their back, shoulders or neck opt for this type of surgery. You may also be experiencing rashes under the breasts, grooves on the shoulders from bra straps. If you are prevented from performing normal daily activities such as exercising due to large breasts, or if you are extremely self-conscious about your breasts you may be a good candidate for breast reduction surgery.
This is a common procedure which will remove and excess breast tissue and skin. The nipple remains attached to the breast and is moved to a new, higher position. The skin from both sides of the breast is then pulled down and around the nipple, making the new shape of the breast. Liposuction is commonly performed to the outer part of the breast to help improve the shape of the breast. Dissolving stitches are used to close all the wounds to optimise your scars.
The recovery time after a breast lift usually involves 1 – 2 nights’ stay hospital. Drain tubes are very rarely required. Most patients find that they can return to work after two weeks recuperation, but this will vary with your type of job. It may take up to six weeks for a full recovery. You will be given pain medications, antibiotics and there will be small dressings on the breasts. You will go home in a boob tube for comfort and to minimise swelling, and then you will seen within a few days for a bra fitting and a wound check. There will be some swelling post surgery but you will notice a big change in the appearance of your breasts immediately. You will be seen regularly over the next 12 months following surgery.
